Introduction
Since 1 February 2025, the declaration of country of production of bread is now compulsory and subject to fines for all Swiss bakeries, retailers and restaurants. The aim of this measure is to improve transparency for Swiss consumers, and to encourage more local and responsible production. All the professionals concerned must now bring their shops and stalls into compliance by specifying the country of origin of the bread sold.
What's new in these regulations on Swiss bread
All bread sellers required to display their products
Since February 2025, the country of production must be stated in writing for all bulk bread sales in Switzerland, including :
- Wholemeal breads and slices served in restaurants
- Breads used to make sandwiches
- Viennese pastries and other fine bakery products
Biscuits and rusks are not affected.

In the case of dough pieces, it is the country of production that must be mentioned, not the country where they are baked or annealed. This requirement also applies to croissants, cinnamon rolls and other types of pastry. bakery products products. However, products with a shelf life of more than 30 days are not affected by this rule.
Why these new regulations?
This requirement is in response to a desire by the authorities to combat deception about the origin of food products. The Federal Office of Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (FOSV) says that this measure will provide consumers with better information and promote local products. For several years, imports of bakery and pastry products have increased. The compulsory written declaration of origin for bread and pastries provides customers with simpler, more transparent information, enabling them to choose Swiss products that are both local and responsible.
